I think the sooner you tell him the better, it's only going to get harder the longer you wait.
Of course he's going to be mad and I don't really blame him. But it seems like you really want his friend so yeah, just tell the guy you are now dating asap.
edit: I so did not even read the posts above me. So I see you told him. I think you could've been a bit nicer with breaking up with him but eh whatever. Good luck with his friend.
