He wasn't forced to stop taking. Although the dispenser jammed, it would have been easy enough to pull apart to get to the pills. He even carried the thing around with him so that nobody could get to them. He chose to stop.

You assume that his doctor didn't care for him properly but we have no way of knowing that. He might be the best doctor in the world. Healthcare around here is pretty darn good.

Though I do understand how they can become addictive. A friend described the drugs they had once been on as "an injection of hot liquid care bears".
