Not true. I've personally had a guy do something similar. And after about 2 weeks of talking to him, he starting to be with me way more than with his "bros." He even dropped plans with them on many occasions because I wanted to do something at the last minute with him.
He was also unapproachable because he was with his friends when I first started talking to him as well. What you have to do is get in good with all of his friends, which basically means going up and talking to all of them, not just trying to get him alone. You have to be as comfortable in front of his friends as you are with him.
