Well I would say it depends if he has a higher rank than you, if he's older, etc.
Generally though, it would probably be awkward if he rejected you, although it's bound to be awkward around anyone who rejects you.

He's older and he's been working at my work place longer than me, but we hit it off really well.

Wait it out. Don't go by first impressions, he could have just been acting nice.

Hello. Lol. My advice is that maybe you should just wait a bit. First of all, if you want to go out with him, i suggest you dont mention anything in your actual work place about it. That why, if he rejects you, coming back to work would be a lot easier then if it would have happened there. Take him out somewhere. Make sure you know some side effects. I'm just saying that if you guys start going out, and you work at the same place, dont let yourself get distracted by the other. This may lead to clumsy days, not staying on task, and possibly geting fired if your boss notices. Probably my advice isnt the BEST or anything, but hopefully it means something.
