"Death roll"? What's that?

The thing I read said that many of the people watching would get themselves off during the "entertainment". That must be pretty humiliating knowing that the women of the crowd are literally getting off watching your naked ass get eaten alive by some kind of animal. Sure decreases the chance of finding sympathy.

Here is that thing from the book on "entertainment" during Roman times.

"Like many Romans at the time. Messalina shared a fondness for watching the bloodsport of the arena. Arenas everywhere used animals to dispatch enemies of the state, and to entertain it's citizens. Criminals and captured soldiers were put in the arena with large cats, bears, wolves, and crocodiles, and many texts note how Rome's elite experienced great sexual release at the sight of the animals mauling and eating these unfortunates. Messalina applied her own twist as she had her own small arena constructed to ensure a private showing for such entertainment. Her preferred method was to place a naked man into the pit, with one arm bound behind him, and his genitals and groin coated with goat's blood. His genitals were bound at the base to make them more prominent and to ensure an erection. A wild dog(always female) would then be placed in the pit with him. If the man sought to protect his genitals with his free hand, his demise was assured. Thus, his only option was to make his groin vulnerable in an effort to fend off the beast with his free hand. This of course afforded the dog an almost certain means to incapacitate the man by attacking his genitals, and bringing the man down. At this point, several more dogs would be sent into the pit, and Messalina and her female attendants would watch with delight as the man was eaten alive. If the man was fortunate enough to defeat the dog(apparently this was rare) another dog would be sent in. This was repeated until the man, his genitals torn off, was devoured by the hungry dogs. Age was not a factor, as boys who were guilty of crimes or members of enemy cities suffered a similar fate to that of the men, the only difference being that smaller dogs were used."

Pretty brutal huh?

I don't have a problem with this being done to rapists, but just regular guys ... I have a problem with that.

And a death roll is something a crocadile/alligator will do to it's prey, once it grabs hold of something it wont let go, they'll drag into the water and then start rolling over and over again until the prey is dead,hence Death Roll

I also found it weird that she even enjoyed watching it being done to boys too!

That makes sense. I read that the guy and the crocodile were put in the same space, but that there was a water hole or something at one side of the space. So I guess once the croc had a hold of the guy, it would drag him into the water and eat him. It did say that the water was shallow. I don't know why that was.

And I guess the guys were naked to add to the entertainment. Sounds like a bad time to be on the wrong side.

Maybe she didnt want the water to be deep, maybe she wanted it shallow to were if the guy were to escape he'd be able to run?
